A prosthetic group is a non-peptide organic molecule, inorganic ion, or organometallic complex that is bound to a polypeptide chain of a conjugated protein, either loosely or firmly. It can give the protein its overall functional properties and may include a metal ion or another non-protein group that is covalently bound to an enzyme's active site.
